Bird on the wire Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a critical stopover on two major European flyways, Via Pontica and Via Aristotelis, supporting the migration of millions of birds between Europe and Africa.
The Black Sea coastal wetlands, particularly near Burgas, are vital for species like White Storks, White Pelicans, and Honey Buzzards, with peak migration occurring in late spring and early autumn. Birdwatchers flock to the region to witness this spectacle, with opportunities to see a variety of raptors, waders, and passerines.

Via Pontica: The second-largest flyway in Europe, this route follows the Western Black Sea coast and is used by countless migrating birds. Via Aristotelis: is another significant migratory route that passes through Bulgaria.
Millions of birds, especially White Storks and Great White Pelicans, use these flyways to travel to and from their wintering grounds. Other species often seen include:
Mid-August to the end of September is a good time to observe the migration of storks and raptors, with specific peaks for different species,
seen include:
Raptors: Black Kites, Montagu's and Marsh Harriers, Levant Sparrowhawks, Short-toed Eagles, Booted Eagles, and Ospreys.
Waders: Various wader species utilize the different coastal wetlands.
Passerines: A variety of small birds, like Rosy-coloured Starlings and various warblers and buntings, are also present during migration
inland areas, such as the Strandzha and Sakar mountains, provide opportunities to see other species, including those in breeding sites.
The Poda Lagoon, Burgas lakes and wetlands along the coast, particularly along the Black Sea coast, offer excellent conditions for viewing large flocks.
Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) is just one of the Organisation's working to reduce bird mortality from collisions with power lines and wind turbines by installing diverters and insulating wires around critical wetland areas.
One of the busiest flyways of the white stork on its way to Africa and back to Europe passes through Bulgaria. Around 80 per cent of the world's population white storks fly over Bulgaria.
Birding and photography tours are popular, with hides in areas like Madzharovo offering opportunities to see multiple vulture species and eagles. Poachers cottage runs small group tours, also short stays at their rural cottage with use of the cottage hides for free. (species depend on time of year.)
